1. Find keywords for your site that match your sites content and have the highest number of daily searches and lowest competition. To do this you can use an online company NicheBot (My personal favorite) or Wordtracker, or you can use Web CEO
Another thing to remember about key words is that the longer the phrase, the more specific it is and the less competition there is.
2. Use a domain name that incorporates your keywords. eg: this pages keyword (or key phrase) is Search Engine Marketing and the domain name is http://driskillfan.tripod.com/search_engine_marketing. It could also be http://www.search-engine-marketing.com etc.
Failing that, try using keywords in folder and file names of your site's file system on the server
3. The title tag in the head area should be first and should contain your keyword or key phrase.As you can see by the heading on this page ie Search engine marketing | Search engine optimization which comes up in the blue bar right at the top of the browser window.
When using a web designing program you sometimes need to open the pages up in WordPad and manually make sure your title is first.

Put your keywords in the beginning, middle and end of your pages and optimize each page of your website for maximum effect. You never know where your customers are going to come in.
